Born in Spain. He sailed to California in 1850 and wrote a book about the journey. In business as Barra & Galvin selling New England rum.
Author of Something About Coins (1863), including a description of a visit to the San Francisco Mint.
His collection was sold at auction by L. Keller in 1866. The sale took place at Barra's Hall at 118 First Street in San Francisco, Barra's business address.
