The E-Sylum

The E-Sylum is a weekly email publication available free to anyone. Numismatic bibliophiles, researchers and just plain collectors enjoy the eclectic mix of articles that cover the complete range of numismatics, including ancient coins, U.S. and world coins and paper money, tokens and medals. While the majority of subscribers are in the U.S., readers and contributors come from around the world and include top collectors, dealers, authors, museum curators and government officials. It’s been described as a weekly cocktail party with the world’s top numismatists – fun, interactive, interesting and educational.

    ORIGINAL ANNOUNCEMENT

This message is being sent to members and friends of the Numismatic Bibliomania Society (NBS). To be removed from the mailing list at any time, send a request to homren@cgi.com.

In a Press Release going out soon to the numismatic press, we describe the purpose of the mailing list as follows: Numismatic Bibliomania Society Vice President Wayne Homren is collecting email addresses for NBS members, a process which began at the national meeting at the Portland ANA convention. The resulting mailing list will be used to keep members and interested parties updated on NBS events and changes to the NBS web site (http://www.money.org/club_nbs.html). To have your address added to the list, send Wayne a note at this email address: homren@cgi.com.

A number of folks signed up at the meeting in Portland. To that initial group we've added the addresses of other current and former members that the Board is aware of, plus a few numismatic pen pals we thought might be interested. This is intended to be a moderated, low-volume mailing list, with no more than one message every week or so. Its purpose and use will evolve overtime - please send us your comments and suggestions. In the meantime, please visit our web site, and forward this note to any other email pen-pal you think might have an interest. Remember, the list isn't limited to only NBS members. Don't assume they're already on the list; we're starting small, but with your help we can grow. Thanks for your attention, and welcome.

    Bob Knepper (71234.3514@compuserve.com) writes:

"Incident of possible interest: I recently sent a letter
requesting twelve numismatic books, mostly German, for me
to read at the Library of Congress in Washington.
Unfortunately, they could locate only two. The "special
search" representative nicely called me two weeks before
our trip from Anaheim to give me the poor results; he may
have incorrectly believed we were making the trip just to
read the books. While at the LoC, I requested any issues
of several current German numismatic publications - but they
    did not have any."

Bob collects old German coins and notgeld, and would like
to locate some of the related literature, eg. Keller's notgeld
    books.

That's all for this week. Happy collecting!

NBS Board members. From the CCC web site:

"Featured Speaker: Dr. Joel J. Orosz on Early U.S. Coin
Collectors (Pre-1840's) One of the earliest numismatic
sales in the U.S. was held November 1, 1858. More than one
book refers to this date as the beginning of our hobby in this
country. They do not know that numismatists had already been
active for more than a century. Dr. Orosz has researched these
early collectors through historical periodicals and journals
and has uncovered many fascinating stories of people like Rev.
    Andrew Eliot, Boston; Pierre Eugene Du Simitiere, Philadelphia;
Rev. John Christopher, New York City; and Robert Gilmor, Jr.,
Baltimore. His well-written papers on this subject have received
numerous awards due in large part to his ability to extract
relevant information that is pertinent to today's coin collectors."

Fac-Similes" The book lists all items produced by the die sinker.
It came in handy recently when I looked at a marvelous, large
collection of Bolen medals. Not only did the collection contain
multiple high-grade varieties of the Bolen medals, it included
several of Bolen's actual die punches. I wish I could say I own
the collection, but it's still a neat "Show-N-Tell topic for

Your scribe can attest to the worthiness of the books announced
in previous issues by Pete Smith and Ronald Greene. Their new
works on U.S. Medal Laws and Canadian Medallists, respectively,
have already arrived in my mailbox. They're both very well
printed and bound, and based on my initial reading, both will
be useful additions to a numismatic library.

    LIMITED EDITIONS

John Keele asked, "I have seen many ads for limited-edition
books. Are these worth the increased price? How few copies
need to be in existence before a book is considered 'rare'?"

My reply: In numismatics, it doesn't take a lot of copies
for a book to be common. 1,000 copies of a Steven King novel
would be a rare edition, but in numismatic literature, that's
common. 300 might be "scarce" 100 or less would be "rare",
    in my opinion.

    I doubt there will be shortages of opinions among our readership;
    what do you think?

THE WIDE REACH OF THE WEB

The power of the internet to bring people together is
one of the many benefits resulting from our web site and
mailing list. The internet has helped us reach many new
and former members in recent weeks.

We are very glad to welcome NBS charter member Cal Wilson
to the mailing list. An early and active member in the
society, Cal dealt in numismatic literature,
held several literature sales and published "Wilson's
Numismatic Repository", an important source of information
    on American numismatic literature.

In addition to Cal, we have John Adams on board now, too.
A longtime numismatic bibliophile, in 1982 he authored the
two-volume work "United States Numismatic Literature",
covering the subject of early auction catalogs and cataloguers.

    "PAPER MONEY" RESEARCH QUESTION

Bob Cochran of the Society of Paper Money Collectors
writes: "With respect to the question about what constitutes
a "rare" item in the world of numismatic literature: How
many complete sets of PAPER MONEY, the SPMC journal, do you
think exist? I personally know of 6 complete sets, but I'm
    sure there are some more."

I'd like to put this out to the mailing list as a research
question. Do any of you have (or know where to find) a
complete set of PAPER MONEY? Maybe we'll turn up another
set or two for Bob's inventory.

Canadian material. Where could I obtain such a 'deal?'
Only from a good friend: Dave Hirt, NBS Secretary-Treasurer.

    ONLINE INDEXING MARCHES FORWARD

Buried in a November 23th Press Release from the
American Numismatic Association was something that
ought to be welcome news to numismatic bibliophiles,
particularly those of us with a primary interest in
U.S. numismatics. "Through the generosity of the Harry
Bass Fund ... a new project involves the digital indexing
of Coin World and Numismatic News, including the date,
title, author, lead paragraph and page number of each
article in every issue of the periodicals. This project
was initiated by and is under the oversight of ANA Research
    Librarian Jane Colvard..."

This very subject is something I discussed recently
with Robert Van Ryzin of Krause Publications during
his visit to Pittsburgh for the P.A.N. show last
October. It is sorely needed, and will be a true
boon to numismatic researchers. So many wonderfully
researched and written articles have appeared in the
pages of these publications, only to be lost due to the
lack of a proper index. Thanks to the foresight and
generosity of the late Harry Bass, an index is finally
underway. Thanks, Harry, Jane, and all involved.

    "PAPER MONEY" RESEARCH QUESTION

Last time, I posted Bob Cochran's research question:
"Do any of you have (or know where to find) a complete
set of PAPER MONEY? Maybe we'll turn up another
set or two for Bob's inventory."

Well, four people responded in quick succession.
Joe Adamski and Tom Sheehan have unbound sets.
Tom O'Mara [President of the Fractional Currency Collectors
Board (FCCB)] has a set bound in matching green hardcover.
Richard Dockter reported having a complete set as well as a
nearly complete second set. Please let us know if you have
or learn of any other complete sets; we'll publish the final
census in an upcoming issue of The Asylum.
