The NNP Team Meet the people behind the Portal

Len Augsburger

Leonard Augsburger serves as Project Coordinator for the NNP project, and has written widely in the field of American numismatics. His Secret History of the First U.S. Mint, co-authored with Joel Orosz, earned the Numismatic Literary Guild Book of the Year award in 2011, and in 2008 he published Treasure in the Cellar with the Maryland Historical Society. Augsburger cataloged the Donald G. Partrick 1792 pattern set sold by Heritage Auctions in 2015, and is currently working, with Joel Orosz and Pete Smith, on the volume 1792: Birth of a Nation's Coinage. A fellow of the American Numismatic Society, Augsburger also serves as vice president of the Liberty Seated Collectors Club. He is a board member of the Numismatic Bibliomania Society and a member of the Rittenhouse Society.

Roger Burdette

Roger W. Burdette has written more than 60 articles on American numismatics. His eight in-depth research books have earned the Numismatic Literary Guild Book of the Year awards in 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2014. He is a contributor to many standard references including the Guide Book of United Sates Coins and United States Pattern and Trial Pieces, and has also written detailed catalog descriptions for several major auction houses. He is qualified as a numismatic expert in U.S. federal courts, and has provided consulting advice to the U.S. Mint. He is a former member of the U.S. Mint’s Commemorative Coinage Advisory Committee, and current member of the American Numismatic Society, American Numismatic Association, the Rittenhouse Society and several regional and local organizations.

Shannon Davis

Shannon Davis is the Digital Library Services Manager in Washington University Libraries’ Scholarly Publishing Unit. Mrs. Davis has been working at the Libraries since 2007 in various positions in Scholarly Publishing, working to develop and maintain digital projects for the Libraries and the wider University. In her current position, she focuses on project management and building collaborative relationships within and outside the University. Mrs. Davis has a background in Visual Communications, earning a BFA from Washington University, and has also earned a Masters of Arts in Information Science & Learning Technologies with an Emphasis in Library Science from the University of Missouri at Columbia.

John Feigenbaum

John Feigenbaum started attending coin shows at the age of 5 and has been a professional numismatist in some capacity ever since. As president and owner of David Lawrence Rare Coins, John has bought and sold many great rarities and built relationships with thousands of coin collectors over many decades. John most enjoys the application of technology to the coin hobby and the Newman Numismatic Portal is a dream project that will deliver much-needed numismatic information to coin collectors. John wrote The Complete Guide to Washington Quarters, in 1993, and received the Abe Kosoff Founder's Award from the PNG in 2014.

Chris Freeland

Chris Freeland is an Associate University Librarian, Washington University Libraries at Washington University in St. Louis. Mr. Freeland is the Founding Director of the Center for Biodiversity Informatics at the Missouri Botanical Garden and the Founding Technical Director of the Biodiversity Heritage Library. Mr. Freeland has an M.S. in Biological Sciences from Eastern Illinois University and has worked as a technologist in scientific organizations and libraries for more than 15 years. He has been a project manager for several large informatics and academic computing projects, including the development of the Tropicos botanical information system, online at www.tropicos.org, and the BHL, online at www.biodiversitylibrary.org.

Wayne Homren

Wayne Homren is a lifelong numismatist and founding Editor of The E-Sylum, a popular award-winning weekly email newsletter for numismatic bibliophiles, researchers, and collectors around the world. His CoinLibrary.com project is now part of NNP. Wayne is a past President of the Numismatic Bibliomania Society, the Pennsylvania Association of Numismatists, and decades-long member of specialty groups including the Token and Medal Society and the Society of Paper Money collectors. Winner of the 2008 Burnett Anderson Memorial Award for numismatic writing, his articles on numismatics have been published in The Numismatist, Coin World, Paper Money, the TAMS Journal and other hobby publications. A Fellow of the American Numismatic Society and a member of the Rittenhouse Society, Wayne’s work with NNP is a natural outgrowth of his career as a software development manager and product manager at organizations as diverse as Lycos and the U.S. Department of Defense.

Robert Manley

Robert Manley is the Digital Imaging Specialist for the Newman Numismatic Portal in Washington University Libraries’ Scholarly Publishing Unit. Robert previously worked at the St. Louis Mercantile Library at the University of Missouri-St. Louis managing a large scale digitization project of St. Louis City Directories. He has a background in the fine arts and history and has worked in a number of St. Louis area museums installing special exhibitions. He has a BFA in drawing and painting from Missouri State University and a MA in History with a concentration in Museum Studies from UMSL. Robert joined Washington University Libraries in June of 2015.

Joel Orosz

Joel J. Orosz is a veteran numismatic author, specializing in numismatic biography, with articles published in The Numismatist, Rare Coin Review and The Asylum. He is the co-author, with Leonard Augsburger, of The Secret History of the First U.S. Mint, the Numismatic Literary Guild's 2011 Book of the Year; and author of The Curious Case of the Coin Collectors Kline (1997) and The Eagle That is Forgotten: Pierre Eugene Du Simitiere, Founding Father of American Numismatics (1988). A Fellow of the American Numismatic Society and a member of the Rittenhouse Society, he also writes "The Numismatic Bookie" column for Coin World. The literary award of the Numismatic Bibliomania Society is named in his honor.

Mark Sellan

Mark Sellan is the Head of Library Technology Services, Washington University Libraries at Washington University in St. Louis. Mark has worked in a variety of roles in corporate IT, library organizations and higher education for the last 22 years. Working as a student in Special Collections at The Ohio State University Libraries strongly influenced his career path leading to roles at the Online Computer Library Center (OCLC) and the Missouri Library Network Corporation (MLNC), following a role at CompuServe Inc. His entry into higher education started with St. Louis Community College where he spent the better part of sixteen years developing and managing networking infrastructure, server and virtualization environments, coding in a variety of languages, architecting scalable storage solutions, building highly available database platforms for ERP systems, and implementing a disaster recovery datacenter. Mark joined Washington University Libraries in Fall of 2013.
